The Moroccan internet and phone company GoMobile placed first at the just ended World Startup Cup, held in Washington from August 3 to 5. Ugandan tech company, AirSave also came 4th. Both companies qualified for the global contest after winning the Africa Startup Cup in April.
GoMobile is a company based in Casablanca that is looking to break down the barriers that prevent people from accessing the internet. “More than half the world’s population does not have access to the internet,” the company’s website states. “They do not have access either because they have physical limitations – devices, data coverage – or for intrinsic reasons – illiteracy. We “deconstruct” new technologies, derive their core benefits, and bring them in an adapted way to people who are not connected.”
Airsave is a financial technology company( FIN TECH) that provides a secure digital platform that links up mobile phone to Airsave Saving and Credit Cooperative (Digital SACCO) in partnership with ECOBANK ltd where registered members on the platform can save and borrow money using a mobile phone as a solution towards eradication of poverty in communities. The service can be accessed by the Unbanked using any type of a mobile phone without using internet anywhere in Uganda by just dialing *270*30# either on Airtel network or MTN network and access Airsave platform.
They were part of 65 finalists – winners of StartUp Cup national competitions across the globe. The World StartUp Cup also comprised of a WECREATE summit aimed at exploring ways to sustain women in entrepreneurship.
